Leuk-y Vitamin C!
In cell line experiments researchers found that infusions of vitamin C were able to kill half of the leukemia cancer cells whereas normal cells were able to survive. According to these researchers, Vitamin C taken intravenously has a more potent effect on the body than if taken as a regular vitamin. [i]
Beware of big profit-makers when you are sick:
Though Abbot Laboratories' new prostate cancer drug Xinlay was denied approval by the FDA because of its lack of effectiveness reportedly, "Abbot Laboratories doesn't plan to give up on it." [ii]
Eat broccoli for healthy lungs
In certain people, the eating of cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, mustard greens, etc.) can have a protective effect against lung cancer. For those who have one of the inactive forms of the gene that eliminates isothiocyanates from the body, a person can have an over 30% increase in their protection from getting lung cancer, by eating cruciferous vegetables once a week. For someone with both forms of the inactive gene, the protection can be up to 70%! [iii] However this does not mean that those of us who don't hav the protective gene should not eat our isothiocyanates. It probably means that we should eat them even more than our counterparts with the special gene mutation.
Supplement your D!
The amount of Vitamin D levels that you currently have in your lungs is more important to your lung health, (it turns out), than even the lung function differences that manifest between people who never smoked and people who used to smoke. Lower levels of vitamin D are associated with lower lung capacity. People who smoke have lower levels of Vitamin D than non smokers. [iv]
C your teeth, C your heart, C your lungs!
Gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss, and also has been implicated in heart disease, [v] is prevalent to some degree in most of the population. Building on the new study that shows the beneficial effects of cranberries on oral health, researchers found that consumption of two grapefruits a week was enough to raise blood levels of vitamin C, even in smokers whose vitamin C levels were 29% lower than those who didn't smoke. [vi]
Are YOU likely to be fat?
In an Annals of Internal Medicine study, of men and women over a thirty-year period, ninety percent of men and seventy percent of women either had excess body weight, or weighed too much by the end of the study in 2001. [vii]
Cancer information
Cancer is the result of an out of control group of cells that disrupt normal bodily function; cancers can originate in all of the cells of the body: leukemia in the blood, lymphoma in the lymphatic system, melanoma in the skin, sarcoma in the cartilage and tendons, and carcinoma in the glandular, skin, or epithelial tissue of the body.
Personal genetic history can play a role in the development of cancer; however, toxicity in the form of heavy metals, pollutants in our food, in our environments, and, as a result, immunological insufficiency, can cause greater susceptibility to cancer.
Even the government is beginning to recognize the role of immune function. From the FDA website, "Jeffrey Webber, M.D. Ph.D., director of the Norris Melanoma Center at the University of Southern California, says there is also a lot of work to be done in discovering new…and more sophisticated strategies to overcome the immune system's tolerance to cancer cells." [viii]
However, 27 years ago, Gary Null published an article in Penthouse Magazine, discussing the role of immune function in the etiology of Cancer: As of 1979 "the American Cancer Society decided to share some unusually somber news with the rest of the world. Most of the tests it glowingly recommended for the early detection of cancer were not working as expected…Burton [however] and his colleagues showed how, by augmenting the depleted blood factors and restoring their balance, the body's immune defense system can gradually be restored to annihilate the cancer colonies. [ix] "Although this information sounds remarkably new, it was written about the suppressed therapies of Dr. Lawrence Burton.
Fifty percent of cancers have been associated to the way we live our lives, including poor diet. Pesticides in farming and loss of topsoils (at least 10 inches in some areas since the turn of the last century) have led to a depleted and pesticide rich diet.
An acidic gut can also lead to inflammation in our digestive tract and can lead to cancer as well. Excess coffees and teas can lead to gut acidity, [x] and there many other ingestibles to be avoided as well, including meat, which is subject to over antibiotic use and hormones, dairy, which is also subject to hormones and antibiotics, prescription antibiotics which can decrease our intestinal flora and make the colon and small intestine permeable to microscopic undigested food particles, and thereby increase infection, allergy, and inflammation.
Foods grown with pesticides have been shown to have an association with increased cancers in the population, and tobacco use is linked with lung, esophageal cancers and is also linked with cervical cancer in secondary victims of tobacco use.
Cervical cancer is also higher in teenagers and young women who have unprotected sex.
Radiation (in the form of environmental nuclear waste, X rays),and Electromagnetic Radiation (cell phones, high tension electric cables) are also of concern, as they deplete the body's protection against free radical damage, and disrupt the normal energy pathways in the body.
Hormone Replacement Therapy, Oral Contraceptives, and non-nutritive food should be avoided, as they disrupt the normal bodily hormonal function, and also deplete the body's natural store of antioxidants.

Becoming Financially and Morally Sound
Financial planner and former Assistant Secretary of Housing at HUD Catherine Austin Fitts, invites us to 'come clean' in our financial lives as a means of improving our moral lives as well.
Catherine's 'popsicle index' is the measurement of how far you trust that your child will be safe when he goes out to buy a treat in your neighborhood.
A 'Popsicle economy' is an economy that fosters intimacy and values of trust, honesty and fairness within a community. Unfortunately, however, Catherine feels that we live in a 'tapeworm economy' that fosters greed, selfishness, and dishonesty.
In order to begin to come clean, she suggests small actions that can make a big difference in taking control of our financial health:
Find extra time in the day by ending your television habits; stop reading the news; do shopping chores less frequently.
Pack your lunch/make your own beverage in the morning or walk to work. Find ways to save small amounts of money that can become a regular habit. Use this new found cash against your existing liabilities.
Create a small group of likeminded people to gather and discuss socially conscious investing and ways to build your community. [xii]
Save money and warmth this winter!!
Here are a few tips from: "Cutting Home Heating Bills: 50 Ways to Save Your Money"
Let the sun in when you go to work—crack the blinds when you're out for the day
Clean the air vents and steam heat units as the dirt can prevent heat from reaching the room
Remove furniture and other room objects from in front of these units
Cover soups and beverages when heating them on the stove to prevent energy loss
Do careful food organization, so that everything can be placed in the stove at once, rather than preparing meals in parts
Look for 'conscientious homeowners' rebates for those who are willing to invest in more efficient appliances. [xiii]
